Life after the Coffee Shop

I am the same as many folks, as I get closer to 40 years of age my habits of old are falling away one by one. No more can I throw away 2 evenings a week in the local pub, I even battle with one now that I think about it, I am careful with what I consume and if I fall to a junk food urge my body slows right up.

Why is anything that I like so much so awful for me, I suppose that is why they are known as ‘vices’. Well then surely I can have a vice that is not so bad for me?

Stop a second, I believe possibly I do! It’s coffee, I am starting to believe it is one of my rare vices that is probably ok for me after all. In moderation naturally. Not like the just gone times of 10 plus cups a day, a fond era when the Starbucks used to be a quick pit stop in my adrenelin filled day, a nimble refuel from a polystyrene cup amongst appointments, simply enough of a fix to bear me as far as the next espresso shot. I was known to throw back a triple espresso more rapidly than you could shout extra shot grande no whip skinny strawberry mochaccino with wings!

Nowadays, following a brief and failed affair with green teas (why are there so many variations that all taste identical?) I’m reformed, and I am a brand new person, the local Starbucks is now a day out in itself, somewhere to go with an iPad full of books or a notebook computer full of pending emails and just take the time to enjoy a nice coffee and a piece of chocolate cake. I have it appears substituted quantity with quality, coffee is no longer just for an energy boost or to temporarily stop the trembles! It is a tiny reward, it is me being good to me.

I adore the cafe but can’t spend all my time there, my career gets in the way. By way of a consolation I have gone so far as to set up spacious and very comfy leather chair with a matching footstool in my private study, I don’t allow inferior coffee in the house any longer I just enjoy a couple of 20 minute breaks during the hours when I am working, I take a latte from my kitchen and make myself cosy for the well earned break.

The greatest procurements on my record in the last year have been that large couch and my beloved Saeco Aroma Espresso Machine. It may only be a small step in terms of personal progression but I can’t help feeling a sense of accomplishment when I recognize that I have turned my phrenetic coffee obsession into enjoyable and guilt free me time.
