Coffee is a global phenomenon, do you realise we drink over a billion cups of this tasty drink around the world every day? Yes that is billion in a day! We can’t get enough of this innocent little drink, yet why do we love it so much, let’s look at the top reasons.

Caffeine - Ah yes, this has to be the first and main reason why people drink coffee. Now not everyone drinks coffee for the kick it gives you, I got off that rollercoaster years ago and only drink decaffeinated now, but only something like 10% of coffee consumed is decaff.

Caffeine is actually a stimulant, which is why people like their morning cup of coffee so much. We are all usually tired when we wake up, and dreading the start of another work day. So it is nice to be able to sit down and have a cup of coffee with our breakfast to start the day. Then as the caffeine hits you it gives you an adrenaline boost so you don’t feel tired anymore, and it raises your dopamine levels (like an amphetamine does) so you feel good.

What most people don’t realise though, is that caffeine is actually classed as a psychoactive drug and you can get addicted to it. This is especially true because after the initial ‘high’ where you have more energy and you feel good, then after an hour or so (longer if people are not used to it) then you will ‘crash’ and start to feel worse than before you had a cup. The only solution to that is then to have another cup to pick yourself up, and the cycle begins again.

Taste - We have access to all sorts of fizzy and sweet drinks in our daily lives, but coffee is an altogether different taste sensation. Coffee is more of a savoury taste than a sweet taste, and the fact it is warm is a great comfort on a cold winter evening.

Social reasons - When you go round to see a friend, what is the first thing they ask you? If you’d like a cup of tea or coffee! It has become such a big part of our daily routine that you can’t escape it, everyone is drinking it and you can get access to it in the most obscure of places. So even if you don’t drink it a lot, then you will find yourself nursing a cup at some time or another when you are out and about.

Temperature - If we didn’t have tea and coffee then what other hot drinks would we enjoy? Maybe hot chocolate, but that is not really a drink you can enjoy throughout the day. So the fact that coffee is hot is a big selling point, I love to have a warm drink on a cold winters day, there is nothing better.

There is no doubt that the world is in the grip of coffeemania, and these are the reasons why. I think that as time progresses then we’ll only grow to love this drink more, and now I’m off to get a cup of coffee?

If you want a real cup of coffee and you want it fast, then there is no better way to get it than using a good coffee maker. There are so many different ones to choose from, but the Bunn Thermofresh would be a great choice.
