As you begin the decorating plans for your living room you may have a lot of things going through your head. One of them is which type of coffee table should you put in this space.

While numerous people don’t think about it up front, the coffee table is quite the important item in the living room. After all, when all is said and done you are most likely going to be arranging all of the living room furniture around this table. So, you should make sure it is a table that you really like as you are going to be seeing and using it a lot.

Here are some of the considerations to think about:

Shape

Do you want a square, round, oval or rectangular table? A lot of this will depend on the furniture you are putting around the table. If you have a curving sofa and chair set, or a sectional set that has an arch to it, you are most likely going to want a round or oval coffee table to match. On the other hand, if you have a solid sofa and separate pieces of seating furniture to put around it, you may have a lot more leeway with the coffee table you choose. One thing to keep in mind is that tables with corners are easier to kick and get caught up on.

Material

The next thing to consider is the material that your coffee table will be made out of. There are plenty of options to choose from and some of these are going to depend on what you want your coffee table to look like while others should depend on how you use your furniture. If your family is rough on furniture you are going to want to look for something that will stand up to that use like hard woods and difficult metals instead of soft woods or glass that can be much more easily broken.

Size

This is often an overlooked issue until it’s too late. Many people go shopping thoughtlessly for their coffee table; find one they like, bring it home and are surprised to find it is not the same size as they thought it was at the store. Store showrooms can be very deceptive. So, before you shop, measure the space you have for a table and make sure you find something that fits.

Extras

Not all coffee tables are only meant to be a table in front of the sofa where you can set your coffee. There are plenty of other things that these tables can do these days. Before you make a purchase you might want to consider if you want a traditional table, which is only a tabletop to work with, or something a small extra.

If you read a lot, you may be inclined to look into coffee tables with shelves underneath to keep a few good books. If you eat a lot of meals in front of the television you might want a table that can fold up into a meal tray. There are a lot of options out there. Enjoy exploring them.
